A Leadership Era Concludes: Charlotte Douglas CEO to Depart Amid Major Airport Expansion
A significant shift is coming to one of the nation’s busiest air travel hubs. Charlotte Douglas International Airport, commonly known as CLT, is preparing for a major leadership change as its Chief Executive Officer, Haley Gentry, is set to step down at the end of 2025. Her departure, effective December 31, 2025, marks the close of a remarkable 30-plus year tenure with the Aviation Department and a historic run as the airport’s first female leader.
An Unprecedented Tenure of Growth
Gentry has been a fixture at CLT, having started her career as an intern in 1991 and eventually rising to the top executive position. Under her leadership, the airport has cemented its status as one of the country’s most vital travel connectors. The airport saw a record-breaking year for passenger traffic in 2023, surpassing pre-pandemic numbers by welcoming 53.4 million travelers. That immense growth has powered the airport through its ambitious capital investment program, “Destination CLT.”
This massive, multi-billion-dollar effort is currently redefining the entire passenger experience. One of its most visible components, the Terminal Lobby Expansion, is expected to wrap up in the fall of 2025, adding 175,000 square feet of space and renovating an additional 191,000 square feet. Travelers are also seeing a new check-in area, new baggage carousels, and updated concessions like The Waterman Fish Bar and a new Dunkin’ location.
Big Projects and Immediate Challenges
The next CEO will inherit an airport undergoing deep transformation. Beyond the terminal, the airport is launching the groundwork for its $1.006 billion Fourth Parallel Runway. Concrete paving for this essential new 10,000-foot runway is scheduled to begin in 2025, with an anticipated opening in 2027.
However, the transition comes at a challenging time. Recent operational issues, including staffing shortages, have caused disruptions, putting pressure on the airport’s management to maintain high service standards while overseeing major construction. These immediate logistical hurdles will be a top priority for the incoming leader.
The airport continues to expand its route network, demonstrating its global importance. American Airlines is set to launch nonstop service from Charlotte to Athens, Greece, in June, adding a new international destination, while Frontier Airlines is expanding its domestic service to Tampa.
The Road Ahead for CLT
With Gentry’s December departure date approaching, the City of Charlotte has already initiated a nationwide search for a successor and has appointed an interim CEO to ensure a smooth continuity of operations. The city’s goal is to find a leader who can build upon Gentry’s significant legacy and guide CLT through the final phases of its expansion, addressing both long-term infrastructure goals and immediate operational needs. The next executive will step into a role that manages an airport contributing an estimated $32 billion annually to the state’s economy and supporting over 150,000 jobs.
For Charlotte, this is more than just a personnel change; it’s a pivotal moment in the history of an airport that serves as a primary gateway to the Carolinas and a crucial hub for the entire East Coast.
