A Promise Kept: Mikie Sherrill Sworn In as New Jersey Governor, Declares Emergency on Utility Costs
A new era has officially begun in the Garden State. Mikie Sherrill, a former Navy helicopter pilot and four-term congresswoman, was officially sworn in on Tuesday as the 57th Governor of New Jersey, immediately making good on a key promise to tackle the state’s crushing affordability crisis.
In a historic and highly-charged ceremony, Governor Sherrill took the oath of office at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark, a powerful departure from the 235-year tradition of holding the inauguration in the state capital of Trenton. The move was a deliberate nod to a central theme of her campaign: that government must meet the people where they are.
The inauguration itself was filled with powerful symbolism. Sherrill took the oath on a copy of the Constitution of the State of New Jersey and the U.S. Constitution that once belonged to the state’s first governor, William Paterson, with a 19-gun salute and military helicopter flyover underscoring her background.
Immediate Action on Affordability
The new governor wasted no time signaling her administration’s priorities. Moments after being sworn in, Sherrill signed a pair of executive orders aimed directly at the state’s rising energy costs, fulfilling a pledge to make this her first official action.
She signed one executive order that essentially declares a “state of emergency on utility costs,” giving the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) the authority to pause new rate-hike requests from utility companies. The goal is to freeze or halt the skyrocketing utility rates that have plagued residents across the state.
The second order is focused on a long-term solution, directing the BPU to immediately seek new power generation projects, including solar and energy storage, and to modernize existing gas and nuclear generation. As Sherrill explained, this is an aggressive strategy to force more power into the state’s grid and drive down costs over time.
A Vision of Opportunity and Accountability
In her inaugural address to a crowd of over 2,000 attendees, Sherrill framed her administration around the idea of opportunity. “The American dream starts with opening a door,” she said, emphasizing that “the doors to opportunity in this country should be open to everyone.”
She also promised to bring a new level of accountability and transparency to Trenton. Beyond utility costs, the Governor highlighted key priorities for her early days, including expanding first-time homebuyer programs, improving the notoriously complex Motor Vehicle Commission, and promoting children’s online safety by supporting a “bell-to-bell” cell phone plan for students in schools.
Sherrill’s victory is historically significant for the Democratic party in New Jersey, marking the first time in over six decades that a party has won three consecutive gubernatorial elections. She is also only the second woman to lead the state, and the first female Democrat. Her Lieutenant Governor, Dr. Dale Caldwell, was also sworn in, becoming the state’s first African-American man and first pastor to hold the role.
The new administration now takes the reins with a clear, immediate focus: lowering costs, protecting children, and demanding results from state government.
