Cory Booker weds Alexis Lewis in two private ceremonies in Newark and Washington

The Senate is officially down one long-time bachelor. New Jersey Senator Cory Booker has married his fiancée, Alexis Lewis, in not one, but two private and deeply personal ceremonies that spanned two cities important to the couple’s lives.

The news, which the couple announced via a joint social media post on Sunday, came as a surprise to many, proving that even in the age of constant political scrutiny, some joy can still be kept private. Their message was simple and heartfelt: “Overflowing with gratitude. We said ‘I do’ in two places that shaped us — Cory’s beloved Newark and Alexis’s hometown of Washington, D.C. — first at the courthouse, then with our families.”

The journey to the altar began with a quick and quiet stop at the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey in Newark. This legal ceremony, held on Monday, November 24, was a nod to the city central to Booker’s entire political career, from his time as mayor to his current role as U.S. Senator. It was an intimate affair, with only the couple’s parents in attendance to serve as witnesses.

The second celebration, a beautiful interfaith ceremony, followed just five days later on Saturday, November 29, in Washington, D.C. The private event was a true family gathering, with the couple exchanging vows beneath a traditional chuppah, surrounded by loved ones. The ceremony, which featured an interfaith pairing of Booker’s Christian pastor and his longtime friend, Rabbi Matthew Gewirtz, was a perfect reflection of the couple’s bond.

For decades, Booker, 56, was widely considered one of Washington’s most eligible bachelors. That changed when he met Lewis, 38, on a blind date in May 2024. Lewis, who is a senior vice president of investments at a real estate firm, quickly became “one of the greatest unearned blessings” of his life, as Booker described her in their engagement announcement this past September.

Lewis is a powerhouse in her own right. A Washington native with degrees from New York University and Cornell University, she brings a blend of public service experience, having worked in policy roles for the City of Los Angeles, and private sector savvy in real estate investment. She has since adopted her new married name, now going by Alexis Lewis Booker.

The couple’s swift move from their May 2024 blind date to a November wedding showed they were ready to embrace the future. Following their beachside engagement in Hawaii, Booker had openly shared his excitement, stating he was eager to get married quickly. Now, after their dual ceremonies, the new couple is ready to begin a new chapter, firmly grounded in the two cities that framed their beginnings.
