Pour Farm Tavern, MassDOT, Dartmouth Mall: New Bedford top stories

The New Bedford region is a place that never stays still, and this week’s news cycle proves it, running the gamut from an exciting culinary expansion to a massive infrastructure overhaul and a serious public safety incident. Here is a closer look at the three stories that have locals talking, centering on Pour Farm Tavern, MassDOT’s huge projects, and a recent incident at the Dartmouth Mall.

Pour Farm Tavern is Expanding Its South Coast Empire

In a bit of upbeat news for the local dining scene, New Bedford favorite, the Pour Farm Tavern, is officially expanding its footprint beyond the Whaling City. Owners Jen and Brad Cardoza are bringing a new outpost of their popular bar to Wareham, breathing new life into the shuttered Scarlet Rose Bistro space on Main Street.

The new venue, which is currently undergoing renovations, is on track for a late-2025 opening. The Cardozas, who took the helm of the original New Bedford location in 2022, plan to open with an expanded kitchen to support a beefed up menu. Fans can look forward to the familiar cozy, neighborhood atmosphere paired with elevated bar food and the signature craft beer selection the Pour Farm Tavern is known for.

MassDOT Kicks Off I-195 Viaduct Replacement

If you drive in the New Bedford area, you have likely heard about the massive infrastructure work coming our way. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation, or MassDOT, is moving forward with the ambitious $100 million to $130 million reconstruction of the I-195 viaduct over Route 18. This five year undertaking, with construction anticipated to run from 2025 through 2030, promises to be one of the most consequential projects for the city’s infrastructure in years.

The project’s scope is significant, involving the full replacement of the I-195 viaduct bridge structure, the substitution of deficient bridge piers, and the construction of new ramp bridges. Drivers should prepare for substantial disruptions, as the project calls for long term ramp closures. The ramp from Route 18 northbound to I-195 westbound is slated for closure from September 2025 to October 2027, and the I-195 eastbound ramp to Route 18 southbound is scheduled to close from October 2027 to November 2029. Beyond the necessary structural improvements, the final design for the interchange area is intended to be sleeker and more aesthetically pleasing for the section that cuts through the heart of the city.

Public Safety Incident at Dartmouth Mall

Finally, community members were recently alarmed by a serious public safety matter just down the road at the Dartmouth Mall. Authorities responded to reports of a stabbing in the parking lot outside of Five Below in June 2024. The incident involved two 16 year old juveniles, one from New Bedford and one from Fall River.

Police reported that they believe the altercation was tragically prearranged over social media before the teenagers met at the mall. Both juveniles were subsequently taken to a local hospital for their injuries and face assault charges. The unsettling nature of the incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing need for vigilance in our public spaces.
