Total of Six Arrested in Deadly Athens Robbery Attempt, Police Say

A tragic armed robbery attempt in Athens, Georgia, has led to a sweeping investigation and the arrests of three additional individuals, bringing the total number of suspects facing murder and gang charges to six. This latest development underscores the Athens-Clarke County Police Department’s dedication to a thorough investigation following the fatal incident earlier this month.

The new arrests were made just a few weeks after the initial apprehension of three suspects. Authorities confirmed that Dermetris Allen, 19, and Christian Hull, 18, were taken into custody on November 24, 2025, followed closely by the arrest of Chedric Stroud, 19, on November 25.

All three new arrestees, like the suspects arrested earlier in the month, face a list of serious charges. These include murder, armed robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of certain felonies, and criminal street gang charges. The first wave of arrests on November 10 had included Samtavious Clark, 23, Jeremiah Gresham, 18, and Dion Nesbitt, 18.

Remembering Antonio Jewell

The investigation centers on the death of 22-year-old Antonio Jewell, a Winterville resident whose life was cut short on the evening of November 6. Athens-Clarke County Police responded to a call of a person down on the sidewalk in the 100 block of Madison Avenue around 8:16 p.m. Despite the best efforts of first responders, Jewell succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Investigators quickly determined the death stemmed from an attempted armed robbery.

The loss has deeply affected the local community. An online fundraiser for his family described Jewell as a young man who possessed a “contagious energy and an unforgettable spirit.” He was a graduate of Clarke Central High School’s Class of 2022.

Wider Concerns on Local Crime

The severe nature of this case, involving six young men and resulting in a homicide, shines a spotlight on the issue of violent crime in Athens. While the city’s overall violent crime rate is generally on par with the national average, its murder rate is slightly higher than the average for comparable U.S. cities. Public safety has been a consistent topic of discussion, with official 2025 year-to-date figures showing 47 robberies and 348 aggravated assaults in the county.

For the Athens-Clarke County Police, the investigation remains active and ongoing. Authorities are urging anyone with further information about the incident to step forward and contact the department’s detectives. With a total of six individuals now charged in connection with Antonio Jewell’s death, the community awaits the next steps in the legal process, hoping for justice for the young man who was remembered as a light to all who knew him.
