1 of 2 National Guard members wounded in ‘targeted shooting’ has died, Trump says

A somber wave of grief and outrage has swept the nation’s capital following a brazen, targeted shooting that claimed the life of a young National Guard member just blocks from the White House. President Donald Trump confirmed late yesterday that one of the two soldiers wounded in the ambush had succumbed to her injuries, calling the act “an act of terror.”

The fallen soldier has been identified as Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, a 20-year-old Army specialist from Summersville, West Virginia. Spc. Beckstrom entered the service in 2023 and was deployed to the nation’s capital as part of a joint task force. The second Guard member, identified as Specialist Andrew Wolfe, is reportedly “fighting for his life” in the hospital.

A Brazen Ambush Near the White House

The shocking incident occurred Wednesday near a metro station, only two blocks northwest of the White House. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and D.C. police officials were quick to describe the attack as a “targeted shooting.” Video evidence reviewed by investigators indicates the assailant “came around the corner” and immediately opened fire on the two West Virginia National Guard members, suggesting a calculated ambush.

Law enforcement officials have identified the suspected gunman as Rahmanullah Lakanwal. Lakanwal, an Afghan national, entered the United States in September 2021 and had been residing in Washington state. A suspect was taken into custody with non-life-threatening wounds, though the police have not yet released a definitive motive for the violence.

The National Guard’s Role in D.C.

The tragic shooting has cast a harsh spotlight on the increasing role of the National Guard in domestic security operations. The Guard members were deployed as part of a larger mission in the city, which has been a point of debate regarding the administration’s use of the military to combat local crime. The troops are assigned to a joint task force, with nearly 2,200 personnel currently operating in the city.

Following the news of the attack, President Trump used a video address to call the shooting “a crime against our entire nation.” He vowed that the “animal” who committed the act “will pay a very steep price” and quickly ordered an additional 500 National Guard members to Washington. The President also used the platform to announce a call for the reconsideration and reinvestigation of all people granted asylum and refugee status during the prior administration, drawing a direct line between the attack and his immigration policy.

The FBI and the Metropolitan Police Department are continuing a joint investigation into the horrific violence. As the community mourns Specialist Beckstrom and prays for Specialist Wolfe, this tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the dangers faced by service members, even when deployed at home in the nation’s capital. The flag remains at half mast across Washington, a silent tribute to a life cut short in service to the country.
