The holiday season is all about good cheer and gathering around a full table, but for many families in Northeast Ohio, putting food on that table is becoming a daily struggle. That is why one of the region’s most festive holiday fundraisers, the Merry Meals Mixer, is making its eagerly anticipated return, ready to turn holiday spirit into hundreds of thousands of meals for neighbors in need.
Hosted by the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, the event is set for December 3rd at the stunning Ohio Christmas Factory in Canton. This isn’t just a simple benefit dinner; it’s a full-on, immersive holiday experience that combines the best of local cuisine with a critical mission to combat hunger.
Facing Unprecedented Demand
The urgency behind this year’s event could not be higher. The Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank has been a vital lifeline, but demand for its services has skyrocketed. Officials have reported seeing a sharp increase in food pantry visits, with one recent two-week period in November showing an alarming 28% rise compared to the same time last year.
In addition to the growing need from local families, the Foodbank is also grappling with reduced resources, as government food support has declined significantly. Dan Flowers, the Foodbank’s president and CEO, emphasizes that community support is more crucial than ever. For the Foodbank, every dollar raised at the Mixer can help provide enough food for three meals.
Strolling, Savoring, and Supporting
Guests attending the second annual Mixer will find themselves immersed in a winter wonderland, strolling through more than 50,000 square feet of dazzling holiday decor, immersive illusions, and a festive atmosphere.
The highlight for foodies is the chance to sample the area’s finest culinary delights. Nearly two dozen local purveyors and restaurants will be on hand, offering their signature dishes and desserts. Those looking to fully savor the evening can also purchase a drink passport, which includes signature cocktail samples at four different festive-themed bars.
The evening is also a great opportunity to get some holiday shopping done or simply support the cause. A premium silent auction will feature one-of-a-kind items and beautifully decorated holiday trees and wreaths donated by local organizations. Last year’s event was a massive success, raising funds equivalent to nearly 280,000 meals, and this year’s goal is set even higher to meet the community’s heightened needs.
General admission tickets are available for $60, or guests can upgrade to VIP access for early entry and an exclusive experience. The Merry Meals Mixer is more than just a fundraiser; it’s an effective way for the community to rally together and ensure that the holiday season includes warm, nourishing meals for every neighbor.
